Albert J. "Pops" Payne, 88, of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, died Friday, May 16, 2014 at the Treasure Coast Hospice House in Fort Pierce, Florida.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, he had been a resident of Port Saint Lucie since 1985, coming from Glastonbury, Connecticut.
A Veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy, he participated in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. Al was a former member and Past Commander of the VFW Post #591, in Wallingford, Connecticut.
He was an avid golfer and loved to read.
Survivors include his beloved wife, of 32 years, Shirley Payne, of Port Saint Lucie; four children, Linda Mitchard, and her husband, Bill, of Middlefield, Connecticut, Tanya Payne, of Port Saint Luce, Herbert Elliott, and his wife Michelle, of Port Saint Lucie, and "Skip" Payne; three grandchildren, Mary Mitchard, of Middlefield, Daniel Elliott, of Middletown, Connecticut, and Kristen Elliott, of Old Saybrook, Connecticut.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dr. Kathryn Payne, his sister, Dorothy Payne, and his grandson, Christopher Mitchard.
Services and Interment will be private at the convenience of the family from the Treasure Coast Seawinds Funeral Home & Crematory of Stuart.
