Bernard F. (Moon) Mullins, 85, of Stuart, Florida, and former resident of Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan, passed away on August 1, 2014 at Allegro in Suart.
Born October 9, 1928 to John and Mary Blake Mullins, he was predeceased by his siblings, Sr. Patrick Jerome, Sr. Virginia, Sr Miriam, Edward, Margarite, Marion, and John.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Teresa and the father of their four children: Jana Mullins, Monica Arnone (Paul), Sheila Hills (Edward) and Matthew Mullins (Megan). He adored his eight grandchildren: Jessica, Andrew, Leslie, Paul, Lauren, Brian, Nola and Lena.
Educated at St. Clair Elementary, St. Monica Seminary, U of D High and the University of Detroit, He enlisted in the US Navy at eighteen and was stationed in Honolulu, serving on the destroyer escorts USS Marsh and USS Spangler in the Asiatic/Pacific Campaign.
After World War II, he began his career with The Detroit Times Newspaper as reporter and feature writer and received many awards and honors for his writing during his 12 years with the paper before it ceased publication in 1960.
Upon leaving The Times he began his career in public relations with the Dodge Division of Chrysler Corporation and served them as an executive in a variety of public relations and sales and marketing posts in New York and Detroit. After thirty years with Chrysler, he retired as the Director of Worldwide Sales and Marketing and Public Relations. He then became the primary public relations consultant for Toyota, for whom he established and advised several bureaus around the country.
He was a Charter Member of the Detroit Press Club, an Accredited Member of the Public Relations Society of America, the International Motor Press Association, the National Motorsports Press Association and a member of the Board of Directors of the Automobile Information Council. He was also a member of the National Commander's Advisory council for American Veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam and established a national teenage safe driving program for that organization.
Retiring from consulting at the age of 75, he spent the remainder of his years with his wife, traveling and enjoying life and family as they spent time in their homes in Michigan and Florida.
He was a thoughtful, caring, patient and patriotic man who loved his family, his friends and his career. He was an inspiration to many and was respected and admired by all who knew him well. He will be remembered and deeply missed.
A Memorial Mass will be said at St Pauls on the Lake in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, Monday August 25, 2014 at 12 pm.
