IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Betty June
Jordan
July 1, 1933 – August 7, 2021
Betty June (Thompson) Evans Jordan, passed away at her home August 7, 2021 in the loving care of her son, in the last days of her illness. Betty was born July 17, 1933, having just celebrated her 88 th birthday with family.
She was born to William Seaborn Thompson and Pauline Omeata Cartledge in the small farming community of Pavo, Georgia. Her life reads like a book. She grew up very poor (though her grandparents were very well-off). She picked cotton as a young child many times with her siblings and Mom to help keep the family fed. Her young life was gray, but her mother was her greatest advocate! (Betty grew up and LOVED the color pink and loved anything that sparkled because of those gray days!) She left school early and married Clarence A. Evans Jr., who was a farmer's son as well. Clarence got his electrical license and Betty worked first for a threadmill factory and later for the Tallahassee State department as a proofreader. She knew every county in the State! They quickly grew their family to 3 daughters and 1 son. They moved their tribe to the small fishing community of Port Salerno, Florida in 1959. Not too many years later, you could see Betty helping to put up the roof of the new house they were building, as their early business began to thrive! They enjoyed many great years of working, fishing, swimming, boating & fish fries in south Florida! She had to work extra hard when her husband was down with back problems & surgeries. She later worked as one of the earliest tellers at 1 st National Bank of Stuart (now Seacoast Bank) and until recently, you could still see her photo in the lobby of the bank! Both she & her husband started Evans Electric Company. When her little sister, Ginnie, died so tragically young at age 32, she fought to adopt her niece and nephew, for life – considering them her own children, and they became lifelong siblings to her kids. She had a love of music and saved up for a guitar when she was young woman. She plunked away and was invited to sing at the Grand 'Ole Opry! She won a contest for yodeling and could still yodel at family reunions when asked! During her kids' growing up years in the late 60's and 70's, she started the Evans Family singing group, and they sang all over in churches, for events, radio and TV in Georgia and Florida. Each of her kids had music in their soul; writing, singing & recording music thanks to their mother's influence. These gifts passed down to several generations and continue today. She later married Mac M. Jordan and they spent 22 years of happiness together. Betty became a successful Real Estate Broker and kept her license until just a few years ago. After Mac died, she married Buddy Burton and helped care for him in his later years. Betty faced many challenges and obstacles in her life, but she came out on top of them all. She would say it was all because Jesus gave her strength.
She is predeceased by her firstborn daughter, Sandra Evans Leland, who passed in 2017. She is survived by her daughters: Susan (Louis) Smith, Carla Salas, Angel Evans, and sons, Rick (Natalie) Evans, and Randy (Annette) Evans, as well as sons-in-law John Carlsen, Kenny Leland, Walter Ratty and Johnny Salas. She also leaves behind 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was, and remains, the matriarch of her whole, large family. She will be dearly, dearly missed, in the worst possible way, by family and friends alike. She is irreplaceable.
A small, graveside service is planned for close family. A memorial service will be announced for late September or early October, as two of her daughters are currently hospitalized.
Please feel free to share a remembrance or message of condolence with the family through this online guestbook.
