IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Caroline W.
Mcdonough
July 4, 1931 – July 15, 2021
Caroline Wilkins McDonough died on July 15, surrounded by her beloved family. Caroline lived a beautiful life, filled with family, friends, world travel, and her passions for the theater, her pets, horses and entertaining. She was a beautiful and gracious woman, entertaining those around her with her flare for the dramatic, and a keen sense of humor. She was loved by her family, her many friends world-wide, and the multitude of people whose lives she touched.
Born on July 4, 1931 in Pawtucket, RI, she grew up in Medfield, MA. Caroline graduated from Colby College in 1952, where she excelled on the stage and began her lifelong love affair with the theater. She began her extensive theatrical career in Summer Stock at Booth Bay Harbour in Maine.
Caroline married the love of her life, Richard "Dick" McDonough in 1956; driving to Mexico on their honeymoon, where Dick had taken a position in finance with General Electric. Their three children would be born there. Dick's career with GE, the Singer Co., and Bowater, took them all over the world. During the 1960's and 1970's Caroline orchestrated many moves as the family traveled across the Atlantic six times as Dick took up positions in Scotland, Germany, England and New Jersey. Eventually, settling in Old Greenwich, Connecticut in 1979.
Everywhere they went, Caroline was very involved in her children's lives, horseback riding and the theater, both as an actress and a director. She had a radio show in Mexico City called Mexico City After Dark , where she interviewed many interesting people, including James Michener and Frank Sinatra. She joined or started theater groups in every country that she lived in, and was President of Cameo Theater in Old Greenwich, CT. She had starring roles in The Importance of Being Earnest, Mourning Becomes Electra, Coriolanus, The Lion in Winter, Mary Stuart and Dirty Work At the Crossroads, to name a few of her favorites. She also directed many plays, and while living in England, she attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.
Caroline was active as a Colby Alum, winning the coveted Colby Brick Award. Additionally, she was an honorary member of her father-in-law Kenneth McDonough's Dartmouth Class of 1925, where she was the loyal Class Correspondent for many years.
Beginning in 1996, Caroline and Dick started wintering in Harbour Ridge, Florida. They initially settled in Mile Lake, then Buttonbush, where they lived until 2015. Caroline loved Harbour Ridge – the beauty, the nature, the charity work (SafeSpace and Founding Friends of Treasure Coast Hospice), Birding, Trivia, Bridge, the Great Pretenders and especially entertaining family and friends.
Caroline is survived by her daughter Lisa O'Neill and her husband Sean, sons David and his wife Katrina; Philip and his wife Kristina, her beloved grandsons Richard, Spencer and Jack, sister-in-law Nancy Lerandeau, brother-in-law Michael McDonough and his wife Carol: and many nieces and nephews.
The service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Greenwich, Connecticut next spring due to the recent resurgence of the Covid Pandemic
A celebration of Caroline's life will be held at Harbour Ridge, Florida at a later date.
