IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles F.
Mccarthy
August 23, 1934 – July 10, 2020
Charles F. McCarthy peacefully passed away on Friday, July 10, 2020. He was 85 years old.
After being raised in Everett, Massachusetts, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Air Force achieving a rank of crypto- communications mechanic, including service in the Korean conflict and in the Air Force and Navy reserves. He spent the next 40+ years working on controls for MA Bell and was presented with a 35-year safe driving record, a very proud accomplishment for Charlie.
Not long after his return from service, Charlie met the love of his life, Sara Phinney, over a cup of coffee. Two years later they married and soon purchased a home in Burlington, Massachusetts, where they raised their three children. Charlie was civic minded and loved to be involved in town politics, helping to manage campaigns, served as Constable for a time, and was a longstanding member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed the neighborhood Fox Hill Mystery Club and the yearly group Barbados trips. He also had a passion for adventure and would take his family camping, boating and fishing. They began in a tent trailer but eventually upgraded to a mobile home. His adventures from Nova Scotia to a trip through the Panama Canal, down the Mississippi, as well as almost every state in the country, brought him great joy and many long-standing friendships. Special places were Second Beach in Newport, RI and Cape Cod.
Charlie and Sally retired to Long Key Florida to enjoy the warm weather and year-round boating and fishing. In 2000, they moved North to Hobe Sound, Florida, where they took up golfing, enjoyed playing cards and socializing, making sure to venture back to the Burlington area every summer.
He was the son of Helen Ruggles of Nova Scotia Canada and Timothy McCarthy of Charlestown, Massachusetts. He leaves behind his beloved wife Sara of 60 years, his son Daniel McCarthy and Catherine White of Billerica, Massachusetts his son Charles McCarthy, Jr. of Islamorada, Florida; his daughter Kathleen Starkey and husband David Starkey of Burlington MA. He was the proud grandfather of Daryn and Joseph Starkey, Jocelyn McCarthy, and Eric, Jordan and Caitlin White.
All during his life, Charlie loved to wear his Air Force Veteran hat to show respect of those who passed and so others might know the sacrifice he and others made during their service. He will be buried at a private ceremony at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, in Bourne, on Cape Cod.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
Arrangements are under the direction of the Treasure Coast Seawinds Funeral Home, Stuart, FL. For obituary & online guestbook see https://www.treasurecoastseawinds.com.
