Dewey Patrick Bookholdt Jr., Jensen Beach, FL

Dewey Bookholdt, 84, died Jan. 9 th , 2020. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, mentor, and friend. Son of the late Dewey Sr. and Lillian Bookholdt, Dewey was born on November 24, 1935. He was raised in Trenton and resided in Hamilton Twp., NJ prior to moving to Jensen Beach, FL in 1994. He married the love of his life, Jean Elizabeth Rebecca, in 1961. A graduate of Trenton High School, Dewey attended Trenton State College where he was a fullback on the football team before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, Dewey returned to college, enrolling at Rider University where he completed both his bachelor's and master's degrees. He then began a career in public education where he was a teacher, guidance counselor, vice principal, and principal in the Hamilton, Princeton, and Ewing Twp. public school districts. He was proud to have taught and mentored many fine young men and women over his career. He also served as a state delegate to the National Association of Secondary School Principals where he represented his fellow school administrators.

In addition to his career in education, Dewey held many leadership roles within his communities. He served on the Hamilton Junior Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in initiating fundraising efforts to build the township's first hospital, now Robert Wood Johnson at Hamilton. He was elected to the Hamilton Twp. Board of Education, served as President of the Hamilton YMCA, President of the NJ chapter of the Delaware Valley United Way, and President of the Hamilton Tennis Club. After moving to Florida he served as Board President of the Islandia East association on Hutchinson Island for many years.

Predeceased by sister Joann and brothers Charles John (Jack) and David, Dewey is survived by his wife Jean, son Dewey and wife Lauri of Jupiter, FL, his son Joseph of Chesterfield, NJ, his adoring grandchildren, Morgan & Clay Censits, Haley, Joseph and Leah Bookholdt, and many nieces and nephews.

A brief memorial service will be held at the Treasure Coast Seawinds Funeral Home, 950 SE Monterey Rd., Stuart, Fl, on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 1 p.m. Calling hours beginning at noon will precede the service. Friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon immediately following with details and directions provided at the service.
