Hobe Sound, Florida: Donald Don' Raymond Blumthal passed away on February 18, 2017 at the age of 80. A native of Illinois, Don moved his wife, Barbara and three children to Pompano Beach, Florida in the seventies in search of sunshine. Many lifelong friendships were established as he had the gifts of conversation and quick wit. Always a prankster, no one ever knew what to expect from him and he never disappointed, as his friends and family are all able to attest!
Following the emptying of their nest, Don and Barbara moved a bit north, step-by-step, finally settling in Stuart, Florida, near their daughter and her family. More wonderful friendships were established and they watched their family expand with marriages and grandchildren. Looking for a change, they relocated to Lake Keowee in West Union, SC, not far from their two sons' families in Atlanta. In typical Don Fashion', they moved into the biggest house they'd ever owned - "to have room for all the family and friends!" and indeed that home shared many happy times and visitors! Don was fortunate to make many more wonderful friends through the Newcomers group, his wonderful neighbors and fellow church members. Shortly after renewing their vows on their 50th wedding anniversary, Barbara passed away in 2008. Don was supported by all those who loved him and stayed in the home they built together.
Following a sudden health issue, Don relocated back to Florida in January 2015, living first in Sarasota near his youngest son and family. Ultimately he settled in with his daughter in Hobe Sound in May, 2016. He was reconnected with many old friends in the area, and continued being the character he always was. He had the joy of celebrating his 80th birthday with his children's families, and dozens of friends and extended family from all over the country who surprised him. His happiness sharing that time with his loved ones was enormous, as was his love for all.
Don was larger than life: a prankster, clown, comic and life of the party. He was the Alpha Male and protector of his tribe - no matter how old he was or grown up they were. Most importantly, he was a cherished Dad, Grandpa and Friend! He was and always will be "The Don."
Don was a US Army Veteran and a Fourth Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus.
Don is predeceased by Barbara Anne Blumthal (wife) and survived by his sons, Kurt Arthur Blumthal and Eric Glenn (Victoria) Blumthal; daughter, Angela Marie Sherlock; grandchildren, Christina Sherlock, Elizabeth and Michael Blumthal, and Ryan and Austin Blumthal.
