IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorene Maria
Tronerud
September 9, 1937 – January 17, 2022
Dorene (aka Dina, Dorina, Dory, Grams) Tronerud (née Rossi), 84, of West Palm Beach Florida, passed away on January 17, 2022 in Jupiter Florida. Dorene was born in Elmira, New York, and had been a resident of Orono, Maine; Salem, Massachusetts; Georgetown, Massachusetts; and South Hamilton, Massachusetts prior to her relocating permanently to Florida.
If the measure of a life is found in the enthusiasm, curiosity and love with which we embrace it, then Dorene Tronerud lived an exceptional life; bringing the same inexhaustible energy, humor and passion she shared with her family, friends and community to her many interests and passions: art, music, and of course, cooking. Her "joie de vivre" and enthusiasm for life were unstoppable, and contagious, and her smile and laughter would light up the room with humor and intelligence; bringing everyone present closer together.
Dorene married prominent North Shore artist Norman K. Tronerud in 1964; drawn together by their mutual love of the arts, and while she often served as his model, muse and collaborator, she soon became an accomplished artist in her own right, a designer, potter, painter, sculptor, and teacher. She was also a great lover of dance, and although she loved, and practiced, African and Modern Dance and Theatrical Dance Movement, her favorite of all was the Argentine Tango! Dorene loved the theater as well, and over the years performed in many local productions, including 'Dylan' and 'Man of La Mancha'.
Dorene brought all this commitment and passion to her community as well. An ardent supporter of Civil Rights, she was a member of the NAACP, and was an early and active supporter and organizer of local environmental programs, spearheading recycling campaigns where none existed before. And, as always, these concerns manifested in the personal: She refused to discard or waste anything that could be reused or made into something else, and she could craft anything, mend anything. When her children were little, she made them homemade toys; little broomstick horses with heads made from (her husband Norman's) large winter socks, stuffed with cotton, button eyes and yarn smiles, these homemade toys she made lasted so long that her grandkids still play with them. Doreen volunteered in hospitals as well; her clown character 'Muffy' delighting children and the elderly wherever she appeared, and prior to retiring, she worked as a private care-giver for the elderly. Of all her many pursuits, it is probably her cooking though, that best demonstrated her connection to, and love for, the people around her. Her family meals, particularly on holidays, were legendary, and brought us all together in warmth and celebration. Her cooking, (a large majority learned from her parents when growing up) and was developed over years of travel and her absorption of all the cultures she encountered, was superb, world class, and was one of the most symbolic ways she had of expressing her love for those in her life. Her innate thoughtfulness, kindness, and caring was never more present than in the food she created and shared with everyone, in particular her family. Yet, no matter how grand the meal, she always had room for a hot fudge sundae!
Dorene cared for everyone, and tried to help out however and wherever she saw need. Her entire life was rooted in an abiding Christian faith; before retiring and moving to Florida, she donated many of her belongings to fellow congregation members and people in need. In recent years she had suffered a few serious accidents, but never let them slow her down, dampen her enthusiasm, or her concern for the world around her.
She and her partner Al Brookfield shared a love for traveling; taking trips (often along with Dorene's son Andy), to Las Vegas, Quebec City, New Orleans and the Maine and Alaska Coasts. They spent time enjoying the sights together, and especially, dining in all their favorite restaurants and nightspots, where, predictably, everyone knew, and loved, 'Dory'.
Dorene was preceded in death by her beloved siblings; her brother Phillip Rossi, and two sisters, Gaetana Rossi Hulsalander and Aurora Rossi Minter, and her former husband Norman K. Tronerud.
Dorene is survived by her partner, Alan Brookfield; her daughter Suzanna Tronerud Hally, Suzanna's former husband James Hally and their children, Camille Hally, Mitchel Hally, Nicholas Hally and his wife Kimber and daughter Blake; her son, Andy Tronerud and his son, Michael Andy Tronerud; and her stepson, Kristoffer Tronerud.
