IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edward J.
Cihocki Jr.
January 31, 1942 – December 4, 2023
Our family is deeply saddened by the passing of Edward "Ed" Joseph Cihocki of Palm City, Florida on December 4, 2023.
Ed was born in Wilmington, Delaware on January 31, 1942. He spent his formative years in Delaware, the only child of Edward and Helen Cihocki. Ed was a natural athlete and excelled at virtually any sport he ever played. He was a proud "Blue Hen" – an alumnus of the University of Delaware. His baseball skills were good enough to land him a scholarship. After college, where he majored in engineering, he was quickly hired by Amoco Oil Company. This was the start of a successful career that spanned the next 30 years of his life. He always liked to tell the story of that first interview – far away in Chicago – quite a distance from Delaware in those days.
Ed was always quick with a mischievous grin, always up for a fishing trip, a dinner out, or in later years, following his grandkids around the neighborhood and watching their games. After his baseball days he took up golf where he was still winning holes and making birdies until his recent illness prevented him from getting out onto the course. Ed was an avid sports fan, and everyone in the family has had the experience of spending time with him watching his beloved Phillies and Eagles. He relocated to Florida many years ago – but once you follow Philly teams you follow them for life.
Ed was married to the late Wendy Herbst for 54 years. He leaves behind a legacy of children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. He was the proud father of Tobi Cihocki Howell, Edward Cihocki, III, and Danielle Cihocki Young. He was always a doting Pop-pop to Douglas, Case Edward, Acklen, Dylan, and Justin Howell, Madeleine, Hannah, and Edward Cihocki, and Caitlin Young Sweet. He recently spent time with the entire extended family including great-grandchildren Aria Howell, Juliette, Sullivan, and Wendy Sweet. He never lost his sense of amazement watching these children grow and change and took great joy in their accomplishments.
Ed lived his life on his terms. His confidence as an athlete translated into success as a husband, father, engineer, and friend. As he aged he became active in local politics and projects and became quite a history buff. But maybe his best quality was his sense of humor, his ability to be very serious one minute and goofy the next. He adored his daughters and was happiest with one on each side walking the bridge, eating a late breakfast, or cheering on the Phillies. He will be sorely missed.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be submitted to your local hospice team; professionals who treated both Wendy and Ed with compassion, empathy, and dignity in their final days.
Please feel free to share a remembrance or message of condolence with the family through this online guestbook.
