Reverend Doctor Ervin Lee Betts passed away on May 2, 2024 after recently celebrating his 90th birthday. Born on April 24, 1934, in Albuquerque New Mexico, Ervin was the older of Ervin Odell and Louise Betts' two children. He remained in Albuquerque until graduating from The University of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. Forever the learner, Ervin then continued his advanced education with a Master of Arts in Psychology from Baylor University, a Master of Divinity degree from Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary, a Doctor of Philosophy from New York University, and an Masters of Business Administration from the University of Bridgeport.
Ervin had a broad career in service to God and people. He was a teacher, a preacher, a leader, an advisor, and an advocate throughout his lifetime. Ervin started as the Assistant Professor of Psychology and Dean of Students at the University of Arkansas. He then held multiple simultaneous positions as a Professor of Psychology at the Norwalk Community College, school psychologist in the Norwalk Public School System, and a Parent Advocate for the Connecticut State Department of Special Education all while maintaining his private practice as a psychologist. His theological influence included serving as Academic Dean at the New York Divinity School, teaching pastoral counseling at the New York Branch of the Southern Baptist Seminary, and leading the congregation as Pastor of the Calvin Reformed Church in Norwalk Connecticut. Later in life he provided counseling and support through the Crisis Care Network to organizations experiencing major distress. Ervin was an active member of the American Psychological Association, the Shriners, and various other organizations.
Ervin is survived by his sister Norma Jean Whalen, sons Andrew Betts and Tim Betts, his grandchildren Blair Betts and Zoey Betts, and niece and nephews Emily Wells, Kevin Whalen, and Tim Whalen.
A remembrance is scheduled for 10:00 AM on May 22nd at Sand Hill Cove Retirement Community. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to either Treasure Coast Hospice https://www.treasurehealth.org/292/Donate whose staff provided amazing care or David Jeremiah's Turning Point https://www.davidjeremiah.org/donate/pure-gift... which provided Ervin's spiritual guidance later in life.
