George C. Duryee, 91, formerly of Oakland, New Jersey, Clayton, New York and currently of Stuart, Florida passed away on August 28, 2022.
He was born on January 30, 1931 in Englewood NJ, son of George Duryee and Emilie (Funke) Duryee. He graduated from Dumont (New Jersey) High School and attended the Academy of Aeronautics in Queens, New York with a concentration in Aeronautical Engineering which developed into a life long interest in aviation.
He married Barbara Koenig on April 27, 1975 at the Reformed Church in Ridgefield, New Jersey.
George began his career in the 1950's working in the packaging industry. He traveled for companies including the Lynch Corporation and Impact Packaging both nationally and internationally where he assisted with the installation process and operation of machinery. From 1978-1990, George founded and developed his own company, Creative Automation located in Passaic, New Jersey that specialized in designing and building custom packaging machinery.
In 1990, George moved his family from Oakland, New Jersey to Lafayette, Indiana where he worked for Sun Industries until his retirement in 1996. During his retirement he continued to consult on many design projects that kept him busy over the years.
Upon retiring to Florida, George became an active Board Member on the Kingswood 3 Homeowners Association. He had a great impact on the facilities maintenance and overall quality of the community. Both George and Barbara spent their summers in Clayton, New York where he worked on restoring an 1890's waterfront cottage that they also enjoyed living in.
One of George's passions throughout his life was his affinity for classic cars; he loved collecting and restoring them. Among the many cars that he owned was a 120 Jaguar, Pearce Arrow, Packard, Bugatti race car, Bugatti Type 57 Grand Tourer, and two Maserati Ghibli's. While owning his prized Bugatti Type 57, George rebuilt the engine and cosmetically perfected the exterior body which was an extraordinary undertaking. George also loved participating in classic car shows when he owned his Bugatti. One of his favorite shows was the annual New Hope Auto Show in Pennsylvania where he won First Place in Category in 1984 and 1987. Other shows he attended include the Mahwah Polo Club in Mahwah, New Jersey and the Concours d'Elegance in Beverly Hills, California.
