Obituary

Gerald Norton Stevens of Port St. Lucie, Florida (formerly of Winsted, CT) passed away on Tuesday, August 19,2014 after a courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was the loving husband of Clarice N. Stevens and son of Kenneth C. and Ruth B. Stevens. He was predeceased by his sister, Carol Lohr and brother Clifton Stevens.
Gerry was born in New Haven, CT on February 5, 1942, lived his childhood in Hamden, CT and was a Connecticut resident before moving to Florida in 1996. He graduated from Hamden High School and earned a Bachelor's of Science degree from the University of Connecticut in 1964. He was also commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U S Air Force upon graduation. Gerry and Clare were married in 1965 and moved to Florida and California during the four years he served in the US Air Force. Gerry earned a Masters' Degree from Rollins College, FL in 1968 and attained the rank of Captain at the time of his honorable discharge in 1969.
Returning to Connecticut, Gerry involved himself in many service organizations including being on the Board of Directors of Dixwell Community House, Treasurer of Cheshire Community Theater and Cheshire Jaycees. He became a Certified Public Accountant and worked at Ernst and Ernst, International Silver Company and Emhart Corporation where he was the Director of Employee Benefit Services. After moving to New Hartford, CT, Gerry served on the Board of Directors of the Winsted Memorial Hospital, as a Corporator of the Northwest YMCA and chaired the New Hartford Pension Committee. Gerry and Clare both sang with the Litchfield County Choral Union for 35 years. When Emhart Corporation was purchased by Black and Decker, Gerry was employed as a consultant for the rest of his life.
After moving to Port St. Lucie, Gerry and Clare sang with the St. Lucie Chorale and the Treasure Coast Classical Chorus. Gerry also served on the Ballantrae Board of Finance, Treasurer of the Ballantrae Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Angler's Club. He was an avid fisherman, golfer and bridge player.
He is survived by his wife Clarice, nephews Peter Nichols, Thomas Nichols, Kenneth Hutchins and Scott Myers along with a number of great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am November 8, 2014 at the North Stuart Baptist Church, Stuart, FL.
