"Sam" as he was known by everyone who knew him died on March 25th, 2015 as a result of cardiac arrest. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 9th, 1928 to Henry Sr. and Bonnie Newcomb Greenawalt.
Sam graduated from the Haverford School and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he later served as a Trustee. Sam played the center position on the Penn football team. After graduating in 1951, he served as a Marine officer in the Korean War where he was seriously wounded. After his military service he joined his father in the investment banking firm of MacNaughton-Greenawalt & Co. in Grand Rapids, Michigan and in 1959 joined the Michigan Bank in Grand Rapids. Sam rose through the ranks to become an Executive Vice President in charge of new business development. Michigan Bank became part of Michigan National Bank, a strong commercial bank that was heavily focused on business lending and Sam was a key figure in the bank's growth. He also served as a Director of a number of the banking subsidiaries of Michigan National Corporation.
Sam remained active in business right up until his death. He was a Director of Williams Controls and Power Solutions International and a marketing officer of The Private Bank in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He also actively supported numerous charities.
He was a long standing Director of The Detroit Country Day School, in Beverly Hills, Michigan. He was always interested in the development of young men and women and was an ardent supporter of the sports programs of the school. He was a regular spectator at virtually all of the school's football games.
Sam is survived by his wife Diane; his three children, Sharon Greenawalt of Chandler, Arizona, Tami Derezotes of Salt Lake City, Utah, and H.S. Greenawalt, III (Sanny) of San Rafael, California; and four grandchildren, Liani, Jaiya, Annika and Elaina. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Lowry of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and his brother, Jon Greenawalt, Sr. of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
Sam was looking forward to returning to Penn on April 11th which had been designated as "Sam Greenawalt Day" in his honor.
