Obituary

Herb Persan of Stuart, Florida passed away peacefully on Monday, May 28, 2018 at the age of 93. He was born in Brooklyn, New York to Henry and Amelia (Hoffman) Persan. Herb joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 and was trained as an aviator, which fostered a love of flying that lasted the rest of his life. After WW-II, he and his brother returned to run the family hardware store in Brooklyn, which they later relocated to Uniondale, Long Island, New York.

Herb married Mary Ellen (Wood) Persan in 1948 and resided in Massapequa, New York with their three children. In 1962, he married Alice (Wilwers) Persan, expanding the family with a stepson and their daughter.

In the 1970's, Herb reignited his love of flying, earning the nickname "Tailspin". He and Alice, both of whom were licensed pilots, enjoyed traveling in their Cessna 182. Upon his retirement from his business in 1981, they moved to their lake house in Alton Bay, New Hampshire where they enjoyed entertaining friends and family. Herb was fond of the lake life, whether he was boating, fishing, flying, playing cards, or puttering around the house. He was a natural-born 'fixer,' and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Herb was also a founding member of the Alton Bay Flying Club, which still hosts the Annual Winter Fly-In on Lake Winnipesaukee. His wonderful sense of humor and willingness to lend an ear made all feel welcome. Herb was a warm, loving, and charismatic gentleman, who had a strong sense of honesty, loyalty, and devotion to family and friends.

Herb was predeceased by his wife Alice, his brother Edgar, his stepson Kenneth Wilwers Persan, and his son-in-law James Fitzgibbons. He is survived by his sister, Doris Jackson, of Deerfield Beach, Florida. He is also survived by four children - daughter Wanda (Persan) Hope and her husband David of East Moriches, New York; daughter Nancy (Persan) Talbot of Stuart, Florida; son Richard Persan of Farmington, New Hampshire; and daughter Jeannette (Persan) Fitzgibbons of Londonderry, New Hampshire – as well as 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and several nephews.

The family will have a memorial service in his honor at a later date.
