Hugh Arthur MacArthur, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Hugh was born in Grand Lake Stream, Maine, on November 25, 1935 to George William and Hazel B. (Yates) MacArthur. He had five siblings, George, Victor, Judy, Stella and Lillian, all of which preceded him in death.
He graduated from Grand Lake High School, in 1953, and holds the honor being the first member of his family to graduate.
Hugh joined the U.S. Army in 1955, and was stationed in many places, including North Carolina, Massachusetts, Maine, as well as England, Germany and Vietnam. His last ten years of Army service were spent at Loring Air Force Base, in Maine. He was honorably discharged in 1975.
During his 20 year career, he and first wife Janet Powers, had five children.
After retirement from the Army, Hugh went on to work as a cook at the Holiday Inn in Waterville, Maine, where he met his second wife, Susan Elaine (MacDonald) MacArthur in 1976. They were married in 1980 after having two more children. They were married for 30 years before her passing in 2010.
Hugh spent many years working as a cook in various restaurants, including the Waterville House of Pancakes in Waterville, Maine and Ken's Restaurant, in Winslow and Skowhegan, Maine before becoming a security guard at the former Chinet Factory in Waterville, Maine.
He and his wife moved several times between Maine and Virginia.
In 2012, Hugh met the woman who would become his caregiver for the remainder of his life, Thelma Myers. She worked diligently to provide a loving home for him to reside in as his Alzheimer's Disease progressed, and was sitting at his bedside as he passed.
Hugh is survived by his nine children: Hugh MacArthur Jr. and wife June, of Gladys, of Virginia, Deborah MacArthur Thomas of Lynchburg, Virgnia, Elaine MacArthur Apt and husband Royce, of Calais, Maine, Cynthia MacArthur Bell and husband Johnny of Bedford, Virginia, Barbara MacArthur Fielder and husband William of Lynchburg, Virginia, Linwood Knowles and wife Vickie of Vista, California, David Knowles and wife Rebecca of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Georgette MacArthur Laliberte and husband Justin of Brookneal, Virginia, and Heidi MacArthur Ayers of Brookneal, Virginia. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren: Jason, Kristi, Lisa, Shane, Catrina, Hope, Charity, Faith, Steven, Crystal, Bridget, Reva, Kayla, Heather, Matthew, Zena, Mariya, Savannah, Deidre, Gabriel, Lea, Paige, Ashley, Terry Jr., Alexis, and Jacob; and 15 great-grandchildren: Nathan, Katelyn, Kristen, Jaxson, Kyle, Kinlynn, Kayden, Marley, Xavier, Vera, Starla, Chloe, with 3 more to be born later this year.
Celebration of Life Services will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 10:00 am at the Clinton Baptist Church, 10 Spring Street, Clinton, Maine. Graveside services yet to be determined, burial will take place at The Maine Veteran's Cemetery on Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, Maine as weather permits.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions as a memorial be made in Hugh's name to the Alzheimer's Foundation at www.alz.org
