James Thomas Brophy of Stuart, Florida, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at 7:09 AM at the Treasure Coast Hospice peacefully with family at his side, at the age of 87. The predawn rain was reminiscent of the rare rainy Florida mornings that he loved.
Son of Vincent and Adelaide Brophy, James is survived by his wife June Habicht Brophy, daughter Teresa, son Thomas, grandchildren Amanda, Allison, Abigail and Michael, and brother Jack. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jayne Ellen, and his brother Vincent, Jr. "Bud" Brophy.
Born December 15, 1927, in Toledo, Ohio, he was a seasonal resident of both Stuart Florida and Oak Brook, Illinois for the past 35 years, becoming a permanent resident of Stuart in recent years.
June and Jim met as teenagers in LaGrange, Illinois and have been married since 1951. They enjoyed much world travel in later decades, and became accomplished landscape painters. James graduated from the University of Illinois where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was an investment banker, partner with Bacon Whipple & Co. Chicago, and a long term board member on corporations including United Fire & Casualty, and Lawson Products. James was a longtime supporter of Florida Oceanographic Societies Coastal Center in Stuart, the Elliott Museum, WTTW public television in Chicago and other philanthropies.
A Service to Celebrate His Life will be held Saturday, April 25, 2015, at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of the Treasure Coast Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, 950 SE Monterey Road, Stuart, Florida, where the family will receive friends after 12:30 pm.
