Obituary

James Harold Ogburn was born on October 3, 1932 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia to the union of the late James Alvin and Gertrude Ogburn from which ten children were born.

Known by his middle name Harold, James attended Kimball High School in West Virginia. The family unit relocated and settled in Detroit, Michigan. He joined the United States Army and later moved to New York City. There he passionately worked as a bartender before dedicating his career to the construction industry. He worked on several iconic NYC buildings before retiring from Mason Tenders' District Council 79 after thirty years of service.

Though a bit "rough around the edges" James was loved. Affectionately called Red, Santa Claus and Poppa Smurf, some saw him as regal and others majestical, one who told tales of wonder. James humored several family members saying a medical scar on his abdomen was due to an altercation with one of his reindeer. He is also remembered as a family historian with stories of old told from his childhood perspective.

After retiring James settled in Port Saint Lucie, Florida. He dressed with his passion for fashion while attending yearly Kimball High School reunions throughout the States and enjoyed periodically revisiting Detroit and NYC.

One of his favorite pass times was just sitting outside in the sun.

James departed this realm on April 30, 2021, peacefully while sleeping. Preceding his departure are his Parents, Brothers: Edwin, Leonard and Richard and Sisters: Gertrude Baytops, Evelyn Mitchell, Dorothy Green, Delorice Collier and Mary Ogburn.

His memory proceeds on with his daughter Tangie Hall-Jeffrey (Colin), son Britt Carter, brother Bernard Ogburn (Diane), granddaughter Tanielle Franklin (Brandon), grandson Christian Carter, the love of his life Danae Carter, numerous children he called his own, and an insurmountable number of nieces, nephews, cousins and loved ones.
