Jane Smith Miles, 98, of Stuart, Florida, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 11,2017 from recently discovered leukemia while in the arms of her daughter, Sally Long, and granddaughter, Julie Lentine, with other family members surrounding her: son, Fred, granddaughter, Sarah, and great-grandsons, Nicholas and Tyler.
Jane was born on May 20, 1918 and was named Edith May Sherman, one of six children born to Sarah and John Sherman in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania. Jane's mother died when Jane was six months old and her father died soon thereafter in an accident. Jane was adopted by Ida and James Smith and they kept her in contact with her sisters and brothers who were sent to an orphanage until they were old enough to go out on their own. So, Jane had the privilege of knowing her siblings and their families all of her life.
Jane married David John Miles in January 1936. They had five children and were married fifty-two years until his death on November 21, 1988. The family moved to Miami in 1954 to get away from the harsh Pennsylvania winters. Jane then pursued a career in nursing and worked at several Miami hospitals for many years.
"In retirement" Jane and Dave enjoyed traveling in their motor home visiting family, and spending summers at their home in Boone, North Carolina, hosting children and grandchildren. Jane was small in stature but big in personality and spirit, feisty and independent until the end. Her passion was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, Jane moved to Stuart in 2007 to be closer to her daughter. She resided at Ocean Palms for many years, and for the last three years at Solaris Senior Living.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dave and their three sons, Ray, David, and Jim.
She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Fred Miles and his family (Sean, Kevin, Sarah, Terri, Tyler, Sabrina, Trance, Emily, Angela), her daughter, Sally LaFrance
Long and her family (Julie, Lou and Nicholas) and Linda Miles, David's widow.
