IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Janet
Marvin
January 25, 1938 – October 3, 2021
Janet Ruth Marvin, 93, of Sandhill Cove, Palm City FL. passed away peacefully on October 3, 2021 it was the end of a long journey with dementia.
She was born in Newark NJ January 25, 1928 to Herman and Ruth Pfeifer of Nutley NJ. After graduation from Douglas College, she went on to get her Masters in education at Penn State.
Janet was a force to be reckoned with. An extremely energetic and resilient woman who made things happen. When Jan was unhappy with the school system, she joined with other displeased parents to start Sandy New School. When Jan got divorced, she started Quest for Singles a social/ support group for divorced folks. And when Jan was unhappy with her job, she answered an ad for crew and sailed through out the Caribbean, Central America and Europe.
Janet married Walter Marvin Jr. in 1954 and they moved to the Oak Hill section of Middletown NJ Together they raised 3 children (Pam, Matt and Steve). Janet was an active member of the First Unitarian Church of Monmouth County and served on the committee to help design and build the original church building.
After her divorce in 1970, she taught full time in Middletown Public Schools (NJ). She also taught at Monmouth Workshop in Red Bank NJ. Eventually, she moved to Princeton and taught in Trenton Public Schools until her retirement.
Janet met Captain Don Mc Clave and they sailed through out the Caribbean on Tango 3, a 43 ' Southern Cross. They moved to Stuart Fl in 1985.and continued their adventures in Central America, and the Caribbean. In 1990 they shipped Tango to Germany and sailed south to Holland, where they stepped the mast and continued through the canals to the Mediterranean. Jan and Don spent 5 years cruising in Europe. Sailing for 7-8 months and leaving Tango to return to Stuart for the winter. They sold Tango in Majorca, Spain in 1995 and returned to Fl. But by then cruising had become a way of life, so they bought Bali Hai, a lobster boat outfitted for coastal cruising. They spent the last years of Don's life cruising the east coast.
In 2002 Janet started spending summers in NJ to be closer to her children. In 2009 She met Lew Addison at Harrogate in Lakewood NJ. He was to be her partner for the rest of her life. Jan and Lew moved to Sandhill Cove in Fl in 2012. They had a very active lifestyle and enjoyed going on cruises, to the theater, swimming, dancing and weekly games of dominos. Lew and Jan always enjoyed the ritual of getting dressed for dinner and going to the dining room. They remained active and engaged until Covid 19 forced them into isolation.
Janet is survived by her children Pam (Matthew Cotton), Matt (Colleen) and Steve, as well as her grandchildren Daniel and Donovan and her brother Art Pfiefer. And of course predeceased by Lew Addison, Don Mc Clave and Walter Marvin Jr.
