Obituary

Janice Elaine O'Brien, Age 71 of Stuart Florida, passed away February 4, 2019 at Hospice of Treasure Coast. Janice was born March 1, 1947 in Martins Ferry, Ohio, the daughter of the late Joseph E. and Helen F. Melchiori.

Janice moved with her family to Lake Park, Florida as a young girl and attended Cardinal Newman High School. In 1967, she married Richard M. O'Brien, married for 52 years, they raised three sons; James, Jeremy and Jason.  Janice was a dedicated mother, homemaker and always involved in our community.  Janice enjoyed gardening, quilting and camping as a family. She especially enjoyed exploring our national parks and vacationing at Dude Ranches across America. Never one to shy away from adventure she delighted in horseback riding, white water rafting and even rock climbing.

A lifelong and active Catholic, she worked to share her deep faith by creating a family friendly children's ministry and Mass each Sunday at St. Lukes Catholic Church. She remained and an avid supporter of Youth Ministry Programs throughout her life. After her family was struck by an impaired driver while bicycling together, she joined Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), becoming President of the Palm Beach Chapter and worked tirelessly to advocate for stricter impaired driving laws and change the perception that drunk driving deaths were an accident.

When their son Jeremy was impacted by Guillian-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in 2004, Janice and Richard selflessly dedicated themselves to becoming full-time caregivers. She was very proud of the level of care that they were able to provide for Jeremy. She served as a peer to peer patient advocate, assisting other families impacted by GBS.
