John Joseph Barton, 85, Palm City Florida passed away on February 1, 2021 at Hospice Harper House in Stuart, Florida. John was born October 2, 1935 in Queens, NY to John Joseph Barton, Sr. and Elizabeth Posvic Barton.
John was a 1957 graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy where he was affectionately referred to as "Beef". He served the country he loved for a brief time in the Navy, followed by the Merchant Marines delivering supplies and personnel. Then while building nuclear submarines from 1960 until 1967. He began his illustrious career building and developing nuclear power plants including Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Plant, Forked River, NJ. He was instrumental in the cleanup and decontamination at Three Mile Island, Middletown, PA. John formally retired in December 1995 as Vice President at Oyster Creek but continued to serve the nuclear community as a consultant for Detroit Edison and as a member of the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) an independent committee of the Nuclear Regulatory Committee (NRC) until 2015. John will be remembered for his intelligence, humor, creative storytelling, incredible people skills and his love for life.
John married Pat Ramiezl in 1957. He was the father of two children. John Edward Barton who preceded him in December 2005 and Linda Patricia Barton who survives.
In 1995 John and his wife Germaine Porr Barton (married 1981) retired to Islamorada in the Florida Keys where he enjoyed fishing and all the Keys have to offer. His beloved Geri passed away January 10, 2007 after 25 years of marriage. Bereavement group counseling at Hospice led to a Hospice gazebo wedding to his surviving spouse Cathy Loudon (married 2008).
John loved fishing, especially offshore, and he loved to travel including trips to Israel, Hawaii, Alaska, the Panama Canal, New England states, and visits out West. Wherever his travels led him John never met a stranger. He was loved by all. He treasured many of his last years with his bonus grandchildren, whom he adored.
John was preceded in death by his parents, the mother of his children Pat Barton, his son John Edward and his beloved Geri Barton. John is survived by his daughter Linda Patricia Barton (Medford, NJ) and his wife Cathy Loudon (Palm City). Stepchildren Donna (Reg) VanZandt (Middletown, PA) and families, Tom Porr (Highspire, PA) and families, Scott (Melissa) Loudon (Beloit, OH) and family, and Cari (John) Crawford (Port Saint Lucie, FL) and family
Arrangements are by Treasure Coast Seawinds in Stuart, FL. There are no services but memorial contributions may be made as follows:
