John Barrett Cummings, Sr., age 91 of Palm City, FL died on Friday, May 17, 2013 at Treasure Coast Hospice, Harper House in Stuart, FL. John was born July 23, 1921 in the Bronx, NY and lived in Palm City, FL for 18 years, coming here from Bellport, NY. He graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY and spent 5 days in a life boat in the North Atlantic after his merchant ship was torpedoed during WWII. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy in the Pacific for the rest of the war. John completed his college studies, earning a BA in English from Adelphi College and went on to become a long time owner and publisher of 2 Long Island newspapers, the Moriches Bay Tide and the View. In addition, he wrote speeches and worked on public relations for 2 New York State Senators in Albany, NY. During his retirement, John was a member of the Martin Downs Country Club in Palm City. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Joel (Rapp) Cummings of Palm City, FL; daughter, Constance Miller (Herman) of Bellport, NY; son, John B. Cummings, Jr. of Palm City, FL/Bellport, NY; grandson, Herman J. Miller IIII and granddaughter, Jacqueline E. Miller, both of Bellport, NY. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and private family services will be held with military honors. Arrangements are by the Treasure Coast Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, Stuart, FL.
