John A. Hammerbacher, Jr. 92 of Stuart, Florida passed away Monday, March 20, 2017 at Martin Hospital South in Stuart.

Born September 29, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the only child of John A.Hammerbacher, Sr. and Carrie Rinkel Hammerbacher. He moved to Punta Gorda, Florida in 1985 coming from Houston, TX, later moving to the Treasure Coast in 2005. He lived in Hobe Sound and more recently moved to Stuart.

John was an Army veteran of World War II. He served in Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland. He was awarded the American Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Bronze Star.

Following his military service, John furthered his education at New York University, where he earned both a Bachelor's and Master's Degrees.

John retired as a tax manager for Exxon after 44 years of employment.

He was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church in Hobe Sound and served as both a lector and Eucharistic Minister. John was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Hall-Bryan VFW Post 10132 in Hobe Sound, the 87th Infantry Golden Acorn Division and was an avid Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 71 years, Kathleen; loving children, Ellen Glennon (Kenneth), John A. Hammerbacher, III (Marilyn), Eileen Lyon (Barry), Nancy Babcock (Bert Rogers), Mark F. Hammerbacher (Cindy), Mary Nadalin, Kathleen Underwood (Terry), Susan Mazzarella (John); 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son-in-law, Michael Nadalin.

Visitation will be from 4 PM to 7 PM, Friday, March 24, 2017 at Treasure Coast Seawinds Funeral Home with a Prayer Service at 5:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM, Saturday, March 25, 2017 at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Hobe Sound with military honors prior to Mass. Burial will be at a later date at South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth
