Joseph W. Stout, 88, of Stuart, Florida, passed away on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at Martin Memorial Hospital North in Stuart.

Born in Red Bank, New Jersey, he had been a Stuart, resident since the late nineties, coming from Stouffer Grand Beach Resort in Saint Thomas in the Virgin Islands.

Joe was an active volunteer with more than 7,000 hours of service at the Martin Memorial Cancer Center in Stuart.

Many associates and volunteers describe Joe Stout as an "angel." The title is well-deserved for a variety of reasons.

Every Sunday, Joe bakes cookies to bring to the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center to share with patients. As a cancer survivor, this is one way Joe says he "gives back" for the excellent care he received at the Cancer Center.

A member of the Martin Health Auxiliary, Joe also volunteers at the Cancer Center two days a week. His warm, smiling face greets patients and their family or friends in the lobby as they arrive at the center for treatment.

"Joe is so caring and compassionate," said Lori Yochum, program coordinator of volunteer services. "Because of his own personal experience, he can relate to many patients, particularly those who are undergoing cancer treatment."

A steady and dedicated volunteer for the past seven years, Joe decided to join the Martin Health Auxiliary after losing his wife. He didn't want to spend time sitting home alone, but wasn't sure what he could contribute.

He started out volunteering in the mail room at Martin Hospital South, an area he also chaired for five years. Joe continues to work there one day a week. Two other days are devoted to the Cancer Center and an additional day is typically spent helping out with special projects. Joe also visits his fellow volunteers if they are hospitalized and keeps in touch with those who can no longer volunteer.

"Joe is willing to help out any time and in any way he can," Yochum said. "He's one of those special individuals you just fall in love with."

At the age of 85, Joe continues to contribute in many ways and brightens lives each and every day.  Quite a tribute.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Hilde, who passed away in 2004.

He is survived by one son, Joseph Stout; two daughters, Melanie Irwin and Susan Rolfsmeier; four granddaughters, Lisa Irwin, Katie Jones, Megan Cavillo, and Victoria Diendorf; two grandsons, Joey Stout and Christoph Rolfsmeier; and three great-grandchildren, Kara Lynn Diendorf, John Mathew Diendorf, and Benjamin Joseph Cavillo.

A Celebration of His Life will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at 4:30 PM at the Francis Langford Dockside Pavilion, 1707 NE Indian River Drive, Jensen Beach, Florida 34957.
