Kathryn (Kit) Granat was born in Maryville, Tennessee on April 1, 1943. Kit grew up in Tennessee and North Carolina. After college she lived in Arkansas, Michigan, California, and South Florida where she got sand in her shoes and called it home for the rest of her life. Kit's sweetness and caring spirit made many lifelong friends everywhere she lived. Her very soul illuminated all those with whom she came in contact.

As a Language Arts Teacher, Kit was determined to help her students and fellow educators achieve. She was steadfast in her determination and brought CRISS reading strategies to the Miami-Dade School District. She trained many to be better teachers through her work with CRISS, as a leader at the Zelda Glazer / Eveleen Lorton Writing Institute and as a Supervisor of Language Arts / Reading for Miami-Dade Public Schools.\

Kit's greatest love was her love of God and family. She was active in church life WHEREVER she lived. Kit was elated to share her love of music, engaging in the church choir and participating in the Treasure Coast Community Singers, and earlier with the UM Civic Choral. Her faith sustained her during her long odyssey with Parkinson's along with the tragic death of her son, Kirk, and beloved sister Pam Heidel.

Kit is survived by her husband Dick Granat; a daughter Keri Kostowski Nodorft and husband Randy; her sister Anne Ross; a brother A.J. Rivers Jr. and wife Cathy and niece Misty; a brother-in-law Gene Heidel , nephews Matthew, Ned and wife Amy, their son Nathan ; two stepsons Matthew Granat and wife Stacy; Jonathan Granat; a stepdaughter Jennifer Granat Nissen and husband Christopher; seven grandchildren: Trevor Payne; Kylie, Kaitlin, and Kendall Nordorft; Ryan and Zachary Granat; Sebastian Nissen; and a great grandchild Mason Payne.

Kit's death was preceded by her parents AJ Rivers and Elizabeth Rivers.

A Celebration of Life / Memorial Service will be held  at the North Stuart Baptist Church in Stuart, Florida, with the revised date and time to be announced.
