Kim Alan Tonkin, 61, of Jensen Beach, Florida passed over the bar Saturday, February 14, 2015.
Born in Nassau County, New York he lived in Babylon Village, New York until permanently moving to Nantucket, Massachusetts retiring one year ago to Jensen Beach, Florida.
Prior to his retirement he and his wife, Ellen Conathan owned and operated the Nantucket Ship Chandlery, a retail marine supply and nautical gift shop on Nantucket Island for 3 decades.
He was a member of the Nantucket Anglers' Club, and an avid fisherman, a talented artist, lover of life and a story teller. Kim was a man who loved our oceans and shores as steward, fisher, diver, treasure hunter and beach comber. As a young man he was a mate on the Cap't Scotty out of Captree Boat Basin on Long Island, NY, a charter boat which his brother Fred would later captain. Kim was a renaissance man, an artist and thinker. He still has sculptures on display in Suffolk County, NY. He was a photographer and a tinkerer and could create and fix just about anything. If it was broken, he could fix it.
Kim is survived by his beloved wife and partner, Ellen Conathan Tonkin of Jensen Beach; his mother, Barbara Tonkin of Vero Beach, Florida; four brothers, Roger Tonkin of Vero Beach, Fred Tonkin, and his wife, Bonnie, of Nantucket, Edward Tonkin and his wife, Mary Beth of Vero Beach and George Tonkin and his wife, Victoria of Brooklyn; and one sister, Barbara De Luca and her husband, Joe of Vero Beach and many more members of his extended family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Tonkin; his sister-in-law, Debbie Tonkin; his father-in-law, Ed Conathan & his mother-in-law, Helen Conathan.
A celebration of his life will take place Friday, February 20, 2015 at 4 o'clock in the afternoon at 98 Nettles Boulevard, Jensen Beach, Florida 34957. A memorial will take place during the summer on Nantucket Island.
