Louis Marvin
Clousing
Jan 7, 1927 — Apr 2, 2018
Sawyer
Louis Marvin Clousing, age 91, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 2, 2018 at his Florida home on Nettles Island. He was born January 7, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to Louis and Elizabeth Clousing. He grew up in the Roseland neighborhood of Chicago and graduated from Pullman Tech High School in 1944.
After serving in the United States Army for 2 years, Louis married Carol Brink on May 20, 1949. They were residents of the Roseland community for 19 years before a move to Palos Park, Illinois. Their later years together were spent at Bethany Beach in Sawyer, Michigan during the summer months and at Nettles Island, Jensen Beach, Florida during the winter months. He enjoyed both homes!
He was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church prior to their move to Michigan in 1990. Louis had a strong faith and loved reading the Bible with his family after Sunday dinners. He was a faithful attendee of Sunday services on Nettles Island and looked forward to this special part of his week.
Louis was an auto and truck mechanic for 40 years and owned Pullman Motor Stables, a full-service gas station, located in the historic Pullman District of Chicago. Pullman Motor Stables was a memorable gathering place for many clients and friends through the years. They not only came for a car repair but often stopped by to enjoy a cup of coffee or just for a conversation.
After retirement, Louis discovered an ability to work with wood. He and his wife Carol, worked together on many projects they sold at craft shows. He is well known for his beautiful birdhouses and had delighted many individuals with them. He completed several birdhouses the summer he was 90 years old! He also loved playing horseshoes and was a long-time member of the Nettles Island Horseshoe Club. Three mornings a week for more than 25 years he would join his friends to throw horseshoes. He was a great recruiter for the club!
He is survived by four children, James (Cindy) Clousing of Wheaton, Illinois, Louann (Charles) Schlueter of Rockford, Illinois, Jeff (Cathy) Clousing of Byron Center, Michigan; and Joel (Patti) Clousing of Wheaton, Illinois; fourteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; a sister, Adeline Leo of North Haledon, New Jersey, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Louis was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Carol Elizabeth, a brother, Richard Clousing, a sister, Anna Mae Krygsheld a grandson, Keenan Clousing, and his parents.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at 2 PM at the Harbert Community Church, 6444 Harbert Road, Sawyer, Michigan 49125, where Military Honors and Presentation of the Flag by the United State Military Honor Guard will be rendered.
