IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Norman Donohue
Schellenger, Sr.,
August 23, 1931 – December 23, 2023
Norman Donohue Schellenger, Sr., 92, of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, died peacefully on December 23, 2023 after a long battle with cancer.
Norm was born on August 23, 1931 in New York, New York, the son of George M. Schellenger and Catherine (Sheridan) Schellenger. Norm earned his bachelor's degree from Duke University in North Carolina. After graduation, he served as a pilot in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1957 and then started a distinguished career working for A.H. Robins beginning as a Field Representative in October of 1962. He worked his way up to Vice President and General Manager of the A.H. Robins Pharmaceutical Division by 1989. From there he went on to assist in the transition of A.H. Robins to American Home Products, Inc. (Wyeth-Ayerst).
Eager for new challenges, he worked for Barre National and Whitby Pharmaceuticals in the early 1990s. In 1994 he joined UCB Pharma as VP Sales and Marketing and helped launch Zyrtec with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. Vowing never to retire, he formed his own consulting company in 1997 called "Schellenger Inc."
True to his pledge "to never retire" he spent the next 25+ years using his extensive knowledge of the pharmaceutical business to mentor many individuals. He also consulted with small and large companies, public and private, helping in any capacity where needed, which included serving on both public and private company boards.
Most importantly, he always listened to all who approached him, with genuine interest and humility, always encouraging, and always positive.
He loved the business almost as much as he loved tennis, and leaves behind a multitude of great memories and many lifetime friends.
Norm is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patricia Ann Hunt (Pat); three sons, Norman D. Schellenger, Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, George (Sean Mallee) Schellenger of Delray Beach, Florida, Jonathan (Megg) Schellenger of Port Saint Lucie, Florida; four grandchildren, Jessica, Connor, Bryce, and Everest. Norman was preceded in death by his parents, George and Catherine; his sister, Belle, and his brother Philemon.
Norm loved his family and told them so every single day.
As mentioned, the other love of Norm's life was tennis, playing the sport for more than 75 years even after a double-knee replacement later in life. His career took him to the heights of the sport playing legendary pros like Rod Laver in 1962 almost winning the match (Laver is the only player to have won all four Grand Slam singles tournaments during the same calendar year twice). In the 1970's he wrote a weekly column for The Charlotte Observer featuring tennis tips and techniques. He won many mixed doubles matches with this wife, Pat, including the Belk 'Kodel' in 1974. He played father and son tournaments with his son Norman Jr., getting to the finals of the National Super Senior Clay Court Father Son Championships in 2006. Norm was ranked number one in men's 85 doubles in the state of Florida in 2017. In 2018, he was ranked in the top 100 in the United States in men's 85 singles, and in the top 20 in the state of Florida in men's 85 singles. There will be a Memorial Service at the St. Lucie Catholic Church, 425 SW Irving Street, Port St. Lucie, FL 34983 on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at 11a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
