IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rafael
Serrano
October 21, 1950 – March 27, 2025
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Rafael Serrano, a legendary musician, prolific artist, and beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who departed this world on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at 1:40 pm, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.
Rafael is survived by his devoted wife, Norma "Mimi" Ojeda Serrano; his cherished daughters, Alison, Sherry, and Jacqueline; beautiful grandchildren, Danyelle, Walter, Krystiana, and Kayla; and precious great-grandchildren, Annabelle, Jorge Jr., and Josiah. He was preceded in death by his mother Demetria, his brother Basilio, and two sisters Lydia and Maria.
Born in New York City on October 21, 1950, Rafael was raised in the vibrant neighborhoods of Hell's Kitchen and El Barrio (Spanish Harlem), where his passion for music and culture was deeply rooted. Rafael's passion for music was evident early in his life, leading him to become a pivotal figure in the evolution of several musical genres. He gained widespread recognition for his 1986 hit song "Clave Rocks", performed under the moniker Amoretto. This track became a defining anthem of its era, showcasing Rafael's innovative fusion of Latin rhythms with contemporary dance beats.
Beyond his solo success, Rafael was a member of the house music group "Visual", where he co-wrote and co-produced the influential single "Somehow Someway", marking one of the pioneering records in house music. His talents extended to film, as he co-wrote the music for the award-winning gold record hit "Frantic Situation" featured in the movie Beat Street. Additionally, he co-produced "Bambaataa's Theme" (Assault on Precinct 13) and "Funk Jam Party", further cementing his role in hip hop's transformative years. Rafael had the distinct honor of touring with Afrika Bambaataa during the iconic "Planet Rock" era, contributing to performances that left an indelible mark on the global music scene. In recognition of his contributions, he received the 1985 Urban Pop award from SESAC, celebrating his achievement in securing the first Gold Record in that division. His collaborative spirit led him to work alongside many accomplished Latin artists associated with the renowned Fania All Stars, bridging musical traditions and innovating sounds that resonated across cultures.
Rafael's warmth, humility, and unwavering dedication to his craft touched the lives of many. His beautiful smile, down-to-earth demeanor, and the joy he brought through his music will be profoundly missed. Though caregiving presented challenges, his wife, Mimi, cherishes the honor of having cared for him, finding solace in the countless moments of laughter, love, and melody they shared.
Rafael Serrano's music and spirit will continue to inspire and resonate. May he rest in peace, playing beautiful melodies in heaven.
