Robert H. Veling, age 90 of Palm City, FL passed away peacefully on the morning of June 16, 2013 surrounded by his family at Martin Memorial Hospital. Robert was born May 13, 1923 in Lansing Michigan, son of the late William and Isabelle (Hill) Veling. During WWII, Robert worked for the aircraft division of the Holly Corporation in Detroit, Michigan after graduating from the Detroit Institute of Technology with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. By request of the war department, he spent those years in Honolulu teaching Navy pilots many of the mechanical and technical aspects of their aircraft. While in Hawaii he took up the trade of watch making in his spare hours repairing government issued watches for the servicemen stationed there. After the war he returned to Detroit and built a watch repair trade business employing several men that eventually serviced over 50 jewelry and department stores. In addition to his own business, he sat on the board of directors and served in an administrative capacity of one of those companies overseeing the new construction, remodeling, and maintenance of the company's stores. He also was a home building contractor, a 32nd degree mason, a lifetime member of Oakland Lakes Shrine Club, an avid boater/sailor, and real estate investor. In 1972 he retired to Pompano Beach, FL, eventually settling in Palm City in 1985. He is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Paul) Bunch of Mt. Dora, FL, sons, Robert (Maria) Veling of Louisville, KY and Gordon (Libby) Veling of Stuart, FL.; grandchildren, Natalie ,Jacqueline, Hilary, Gordon, and Warner Veling. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marion; his brothers William, and Jack. A private ceremony and celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to the Shriners Hospital for Children (2900 Rocky Point Drive; Tampa, FL 33607).
