IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert H.
Von Geldern
January 25, 1932 – September 1, 2024
Robert Hasso (Bob) von Geldern died on September 1, 2024, in Stuart, Florida, at the age of 92.
Bob was born on January 25, 1932, in Morristown, New Jersey; the oldest child of Hasso and Madeline von Geldern. Bob grew up playing baseball and football in the nearby sandlot; whenever his German Shepherd Rex accompanied him, he claimed that nobody was able to tackle him, because Rex wouldn't let them!
Bob, who went by the nickname Bugs to his friends (because his initials BvG look a lot like "bug") attended Chatham High School, then went to Drew University, where he majored in mathematics and met his future bride Louise Berry. After college he joined the Navy, where he served at the rank of Lieutentant, Junior Grade on the USS Antietam, the world's first angled-deck aircraft carrier. He spent most of his naval career sailing the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas.
He returned to New Jersey, where he and Louise settled down and raised three children, Tom, Jim, and Lisa (Frey). Bob spent his working life as an actuary for Home Life Insurance Company in New York City, making the long daily commute from Piscataway, NJ, retiring as a Vice President in 1997. He spent his free time gardening, playing various sports (softball, bowling, golf), and attending the many activities his kids participated in.
During the 1990's, Bob and Louise began taking vacations in Florida; first a week, then two, then a month. In 2001 they moved south for good; living first in a condo on Hutchinson Island, then in 2011 (after Louise's death in 2008) moving to the Willoughby community in Stuart. At the time of his death Bob was a resident at Addington Place.
In addition to sister Margaret (Peggy) Layden and his children Tom (Cindy Skrukrud), Jim (Monica), and Lisa (Rocky Frey) Bob leaves behind four grandchildren, Thomas (Katie), William (Katie), Olga Kaczmarczyk (James), and Nicole Frey, and three great grandchildren (Theo, Niko, and Leila), as well as his beloved caregiver and advocate, Lisa Kane.
Bob was a jokester with a quick sense of humor, and a lifelong, diehard Yankees fan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Bob's name may be made at either Treasure Coast Hospice (https://treasurehealth.org/ ) or the Manatee Center in Fort Pierce (https://www.manateeeducationcenter.org/ ).
