IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Roberta “Bobbie"
Deemer
July 1, 1943 – July 30, 2025
Roberta (Bobbie) Patton Deemer lost her long battle with dementia on July 30, 2025 at the age of 82. She had an incredible joy for life and vivacious personality which will be cherished forever by everyone who knew her and loved her.
Bobbie (the only people who called her Roberta were really mad at her) was born in Cincinnati and grew up in Columbus, Ohio. She attended Otterbein College but soon transferred to The Ohio State University because they had a much better football team. Bobbie has been a rabid Buckeye fan ever since (her planting a buckeye just outside Michigan Stadium is legendary). She then moved to Boston where she earned a Master's Degree in Education at Boston University.
Her enthusiasm and intelligence led to jobs as an Editor at Ginn (for Isaac Asimov), a National Park Ranger at Cape Cod National Seashore, and teaching positions in Greenwich CT, Lexington MA and as an adjunct professor at Indian River Community College. She also taught exercise classes for the Treasure Coast YMCA back when they were still operating out of a storefront. Most recently, she was the office manager for Deemer Technical Research, where she did everything from going to The Big Red Q every Friday afternoon to print weekly memos to keeping her husband supplied with everything he needed to keep the business going – especially her support and love.
She met Walter, her future husband, in Boston in 1972. They quickly became soulmates, were married in 1973 and moved to an oceanfront house in Plymouth in 1976. Two years later, Bobbie announced "I am not spending another winter here!" during the Blizzard of 1978. They bought a condo in Stuart three weeks later. They became full time Floridians in 1986, buying a house on the North Fork in Port St. Lucie, and moved into Sandhill Cove in Palm City in 2020.
Bobbie was a Past President of the Port St. Lucie Business Women and, later, a proud member of the Wise Women, the group of retired PSLBW members who enjoyed reliving the good old days at monthly luncheons. She was a Past President of the AAUW chapters in both Plymouth and St. Lucie County and a board member of Heathcote Botanical Gardens. Most of all, Bobbie fought ferociously all her life for women's rights. She was also very actively involved in local issues; when she moved out of her house, she joyfully put five boxes of correspondence with St. Lucie County officials in the trash.
Bobbie's impish nature emerged early on. When she was 16, she went by herself on a group tour to Paris and the Rome Olympics, although her mother did ask an older lady to take Bobbie under her wing. Enter Hazel. In Paris, after one of their several post-2am evenings, Bobbie's diary entry was "I LIKE WINE" -- in big capital letters .It wasn't until her mother asked to see the diary that she realized she should have created two versions.
Her only surviving family member is her husband of 52 years, Walter, along with the last of the cats she adopted and thoroughly spoiled over the years, Friendly.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your local animal shelter. Bobbie rescued 13 cats during her lifetime -- and unlike her husband, fervently wished she could have rescued even more.
Funeral arrangements are private, but a gathering to celebrate her life will be held at a later date.
Please feel free to share a remembrance or message of condolence with the family through this online guestbook.
