IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Roger Connell
Grimson
December 2, 1941 – November 10, 2024
Roger Connell Grimson passed away on November 10, 2024, in Hobe Sound, Florida, at the age of 82. Born on December 2, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, he was raised in North Carolina, where his early life set the stage for his future achievements. Roger obtained his PhD in Mathematics from Duke University, launching a career characterized by significant contributions to academia and beyond.
His tenure at Stony Brook University, in both the Department of Preventative Medicine and the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, was marked by a deep commitment to research. Roger's scholarly work, spanning mathematics, physics, and public health, has been published and cited widely, making an impact that extended to national media and academia. His post-retirement statistical consulting business allowed him to continue influencing these fields beyond his university career.
Roger's service to his community was driven by his Christian faith as a devoted member of the United Methodist Church. His faith-filled life was accompanied by an unassuming and genteel manner that won the hearts of all who met him. Known for his generosity and warmth, Roger was a beloved figure, respected and admired by everyone.
He leaves behind his wife, Linda DeIorio Grimson; children, Randy Grimson, Julia Simpson; stepdaughters, Rachel Borders, Rebekah Borders Aubrey; grandchildren, Nicholas "Cole" Simpson, Olivia Simpson. His brother, Baird Sanford Grimson, MD, also survives him. Predeceased family members include his parents, Keith Sanford and Ardyce Mozelle (nee Johnson) Grimson, along with his brother, Keith Sanford Grimson, Jr.
While Roger spent significant time in New York, his final years in South Florida with Linda and their pets were filled with the joy he brought to every endeavor. His life was a celebration of happiness and love, a reminder of the beauty he left in our lives. "Three things will last forever—Faith, Hope, and Love—and the greatest of these is love" (I Corinthians 13:13). In this spirit, we cherish the beautiful memories he leaves with us.
