Obituary

Sandra H. Withers, 85, of Hobe Sound, Florida passed away unexpectedly on January 25, 2024, of complications following a fall.

Sandy was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on April 4, 1938 to Aaron and Jean (Silverstein) Lichtenstein. She graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in dietetics at the age of 20. Sandy married her first husband, Benson Drucker, in Brooklyn and they lived in Miami for a few years before moving to Juneau, Alaska where she resided for over two decades, including with her second husband, Scott Withers (deceased).

During Sandy's time in Juneau, she raised her only child, Michelle Drucker, for whom she was a role model in the breaking of the proverbial glass ceiling. She and her dear friend Carole were among the first female leaders in Alaskan state government, paving the way for future generations.

Sandy and Scott moved to Stuart/Hobe Sound, Florida in 1983, where he retired, and she was employed as the Executive Director of the Martin County Board of Realtors until her retirement in 1992. For many years, she was an active golfer and enjoyed Florida life.

For decades, Sandy was very actively engaged in the Treasure Coast Chapter of the Brandeis National Committee, where she met and kept friendships with a very special group of women. At the time of her passing, she was Co-President of the organization. She took great joy in organizing and attending luncheons, book discussions, and other events to support Brandeis University's mission.

Sandy led an active life, which included a lifelong passion for reading and discussing books, travel, theatre, opera, the yum-yum cooking group, the wonderful widows group, watching movies/TV series; and her love for games, creating them for events and consistently playing bridge, mahjong, Apples to Apples in Maine at Thanksgiving, and any word game possible. Her most joy, however, came from her family.

Sandy leaves behind her daughter Michelle Drucker and husband Harrison Horning of Falmouth, Maine; grandson Sam Horning and fiancée Molly St. Germain of Dover, New Hampshire; grandson Jake Horning and fiancée  Leah Graves of Yarmouth, Maine. She loved spending time with them and following their myriad adventures. She also leaves her brother Bernard "Sonny" Lichtenstein of Brooklyn, New York, Sonny's partner Betsy, and Sonny's children Jena and Freddie and their respective spouses Anand and Carlyn; stepson Nowlin Withers and spouse Lisa of Anchorage, Alaska and their family; stepdaughter Treacy Lee of Spokane, Washington and her family; and numerous other family members and dear friends.

We will all remember Sandy's vibrant personality, passion for lifelong learning, inner and outer beauty, and fierce independence. She will be greatly missed by many.

Per Sandy's wishes, a small private gathering was held to celebrate her life. For those who wish, contributions can be made to a nonprofit organization of choice.
