Wilfred Schartel
Wilfred Schartel, 88, of Hobe Sound FL., passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday February 24, 2015.
He was born on May 17, 1926 in New York City.
He was a WWII Veteran serving in the 3rd Battalion, 254 Infantry Regiment, 63 Infantry Division and saw combat action in Germany during late 1944 and 1945.
Following the war, he began his career with New Jersey Bell Telephone and during his 38 year career had increasing technical and managerial responsibilities.
He married his wife Trudy on October 3, 1953. Together they resided in Bergen County New Jersey, until his retirement from New Jersey Bell in 1985. Upon his retirement they moved to Hobe Sound Florida.
Will had many hobbies including Ham Radio and used the call sign K2DSU. He loved the outdoors, canoeing, history, traveling and spending summers with his family at their lake house in Canada.
During the 61 years of happy marriage to Trudy, they were an example of grace and dignity as they aged together. Their fun loving spirit served as a model and will always be remembered by his family and friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife Trudy of 61 years, his three sons (and wives), Will Schartel (Melissa) of Littleton, CO., Ken Schartel (Cindy) of Gulf Breeze, FL. and Eric Schartel (Kristi) of Palm City, FL.
Grandchildren Kenny Schartel of Gulf Breeze, FL., Hannah Schartel of Boulder, CO.,
Jessica Hughes of Seattle, WA., Jason Hoffman of Middletown, NJ and Cody Brown of Palm City FL. He is also survived by his brother Egon Schartel of Valdosta, GA. He is preceded in death by his grandson, Kevin Schartel.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 12 noon Monday, March 2, 2015 at Treasure Coast Seawinds Funeral Home & Crematory, 950 SE Monterey Road, Stuart, FL 34994. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 12 noon. Interment with military honors will follow at 2:15 pm in South Florida National Cemetery, Lake Worth, FL.
