Obituary

William Herbert Alfred Knight, Sr., a long-time resident of Port St. Lucie, Florida, died on May 29, 2023, at home with his family in Glenn Dale, Maryland, at the age of 94.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, on December 16, 1928, to Enos and Winifred Knight, William was the youngest of five children. He attended Dinthill Technical High School and continued his studies in technical and engineering disciplines. In 1953, he met his beautiful bride, Christine, at a church youth function and they later started a family.

William took extraordinary pride in his work. His long and productive career began in Jamaica as a Millwright with Alcan Alumina, and he rose quickly through the ranks to Maintenance Foreman and then General Foreman. His highly sought after skill took him to Christiansted, St. Croix, in 1968 when he was recruited to serve as a General Foreman at Harvey Alumina, which was later purchased by Martin Marietta Corporation. At Martin Marietta, he was appointed Superintendent and then promoted to Principal Engineer in Construction. Following his retirement from Martin Marietta, he relocated with his family to Florida and began a second career as a Housing Compliance Inspector with the City of Fort Pierce and held a Standard Inspector certification with the State of Florida.

Smart, diligent, and technically inclined, William could fix anything and made sure to pass on his high standards of excellence to his children. He was a generous soul who gave freely of his time and talents to friends, family, and strangers and also routinely donated to numerous charities. A consummate prankster, he always had a joke or a tongue-in-cheek remark that entertained those around him and often resulted in his own eye-watering laughter. Finally, and most importantly, William was a man of unyielding faith. In St. Croix, he attended Sunny Isle Baptist Church and became a parishioner at First Baptist Church of Port St. Lucie upon moving to Florida. He began each day in quiet contemplation with the Lord, reading from his well-worn prayer book.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Christine Knight; daughters, Marcia and Marie Knight; parents, Enos and Winifred Knight; and siblings, Lily Gooden, Esmie Knight, and Samuel Knight. He is survived by his son, William (Jolinda) Knight, Jr.; stepson, Clive (Ella) Richards; granddaughter, whom he raised, Denise (Courtney) Wilkerson; sister, Fannie Knight; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 13, 1 p.m., at the Treasure Coast Seawinds Funeral Home in Stuart, Florida.
