Obituary

Willliam 'Bill' Cleo Summers of Stuart, Florida, died peacefully in his home at Stuart Lodge on July 23, 2021. Bill is survived by: his loving wife, Doedy (Malone) Summers; four doting daughters, Andrea Burkhalter, Denise Maynard, Cheryl Summers, and Lora Fegley; sons-in-law Robert Maynard, Jeff Farr, and Brent Fegley; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom he held and adored. He was a proud patriarch and loved making his family laugh and sing.

Bill was born on a farm in Tifton, Georgia, on July 16, 1928. He was a farm boy at heart and always found solace outdoors. Wanting to make his way in the world, Bill left home at the age of 15, served with the Merchant Marines, and traveled all over the Philippines and South Pacific. He later joined the Marine Corps and was awarded the American Spirit Honor Medal during his tenure.

A 35-year retiree of FP&L, Bill made a significant mark as a resident of Martin County. He was a master gardener and enjoyed time spent in his yard and ranch in Indiantown. He and Doedy have cared for numerous dogs, horses, and cows during their years together. Their home was a welcoming place to all. Ardent church-goer, Bill is a charter member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Palm City and has held various leadership roles over the years.

Bill considered himself a 'student of politics' and kept up with current events from the local to national level. He advocated for his beliefs fiercely and openly at the county seat, and many might remember his weekly appearances at the Martin County Commissioners' meetings.

A service in his honor will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2655 Immanuel Drive, Palm City, on Monday, August 9, 2021, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to Treasure Coast Hospice or The Friends of the Martin County Library System.
